Lawrence Cherney. Oboist, administrator, teacher, b Peterborough, Ont, 1 May 1946, BA (Toronto) 1969, M MUS (Toronto)1978. After studying 1959-64 with Perry Bauman at the RCMT, he entered the University of Toronto in 1964 as a philosophy student while continuing his studies with Bauman. He received a Ford Foundation grant (1966) and Canada Council awards (1967-70) to study in the USA with John Mack and Ray Still, among others.

Cherney was a charter member of the NACO (1969-72), and a founding member of the York Winds (1972-82). He has performed extensively in Canada, the USA, Europe, and Israel with the York Winds and, after 1982, as a soloist. He has appeared with the CBC Vancouver Orchestra, Manitoba Chamber Orchestra, Amadeus Ensemble, Orford String Quartet, Chilingirian Quartet, Elmer Iseler Singers, and Tudor Singers. His performances have been broadcast on CBC and by most major European radio networks. Cherney is well-known as an interpreter of both traditional and contemporary music with a strong commitment to new Canadian repertoire. He has commissioned or premiered some 35 works from Canadian, European and American composers. In recognition of his contribution to Canadian new music, in 2009 Cherney was named a Canadian Music Centre ambassador.

In 1981 Cherney became the founding artistic director of 'Music at Sharon' and also of Chamber Concerts Canada. The latter has produced two series: 'Musical Mondays' first at Toronto's Young People's Theatre, then at the St Lawrence Centre, and 'Sunday Stage' at Harbourfront. He has been instructor of oboe and chamber music at University of Ottawa (1969-72), York University (1973-77), RCMT (1978- ) and University of Toronto (1979-80).

Lawrence Cherney is Brian Cherney's brother.
