John Barrow, football player (b at Delray Beach, Fla 31 Oct 1935). Barrow's stellar 14-year career (1957-70) with the HAMILTON TIGER CATS included recognition as an Eastern all-star 12 times and all-Canadian 11 times; the SCHENLEY AWARD as outstanding defensive player in 1962 and runner-up in 1959, 1961, 1964, 1965 and 1967; and he was voted the CANADIAN FOOTBALL LEAGUE"lineman of the century" in 1967. Barrow anchored a Tiger-Cat defence renowned for its hard hitting and vicious tackling, and led his team to 9 GREY CUP appearances in 11 years, winning the championship in 1957, 1963, 1965 and 1967. His skills were not, however, confined to defence, as evidenced by 4 additional all-star selections as an offensive tackle in 1957, 1958, 1959 and 1960. After retiring from playing, Barrow was the TORONTO ARGONAUTS general manager from 1971 to 1975. He was inducted into the CANADIAN FOOTBALL HALL OF FAME in 1976.
