Global Communications Limited
Global Communications Limited, established 1970, owns and operates Global Television Network and is based in Toronto. The CRTC granted the company a broadcast licence for operations in southern Ontario 21 July 1972. Insufficient viewers and revenues brought about reorganization and new ownership by Global Ventures Western Ltd and IWC Communications Ltd in 1974; Ventures bought out IWC in 1976. In 1978 Global acquired Tee Vee Records Inc, primarily a retail record distribution operation, as well as control of Prosoccer Ltd, which operated the now-defunct soccer team, Toronto Blizzard. Each venture lost money and was subsequently sold off. The television operation continued to grow and now generates more than $50 million in revenues from air-time sales alone and another $12 million from production and syndication. By 1986 the company had established itself as a major producer. Global Television Network covers approximately 94% of Ontario, reaching approximately 3 million households and 8.5 million people.
