Gould, Evelyn

Evelyn Gould. Soprano, b Toronto 9 Mar 1925. She studied privately 1940-4 with Nina de Gedeonoff and made her professional debut in 1943 in a TSO Secondary School concert. In 1944 she received a fellowship to attend the Juilliard School, where her teachers were Florence Page Kimball and Queena Mario. She later commuted to New York for private study with Rosalie Miller and Sidney Dietch. In 1945 she was awarded first prize in 'Singing Stars of Tomorrow', and that year (and again in 1946) she received the LaFlèche Trophy for her 'contribution to Canadian radio as a classical singer,' largely through her work 1944-6 on CBC's 'Music for Canadians'. Later CBC assignments ranged from the starring role 1953-4 in the musical-variety radio series 'Let's Make Music' to leading parts 1953-6 in opera productions for TV. For the COC she sang Lucinda in Wolf-Ferrari's School for Fathers in 1954, Adele in Die Fledermaus in 1955, and Zerlina in Don Giovanni in 1956. She retired from public performance in 1956.
