Elizabeth Goudie

Elizabeth Goudie, née Blake, writer (b at Mud Lake, Lab 20 Apr 1902; d at Happy Valley, Lab 10 June 1982). Of Indigenous, French and English ancestry, she married Jim Goudie, a Labrador trapper, in 1920.

For 40 years she raised her family and lived the difficult life of a trapper's wife. Her husband died in 1963 and Goudie wrote her autobiography, Woman of Labrador (1973). The book combined a history of Labrador with a moving story of Goudie's life. The first recorded story of a trapper and his family in the Labrador wilds, it drew warm praise from the critics and she became internationally known.
