Bates, Duane
Duane (Adair) Bates. Educator, conductor, b Luseland, west of Saskatoon, 26 May 1940; B MUS (British Columbia) 1962, M SC music education (Illinois) 1964, D ED (Illinois) 1972. He took trumpet lessons in Regina and studied music education at university. His doctoral thesis was titled 'The status of music education in 1969-70 in the cities of southern Ontario having a population in excess of 100,000'. In 1969 he began teaching at Queen's University, where in 1991 he continued to conduct the Queen's University Wind Ensemble and Jazz Ensemble and also to teach conducting, music history, and music education. Bates was editor 1973-9 of the Canadian Music Educator, contributed in 1983 to the Ontario Ministry of Education's Curriculum Ideas for Teachers, and in 1986 prepared the CMEA's Forum Report. His areas of research interest are contemporary music and evaluation in music education, and he has written articles on these subjects for the Canadian Music Educator. He was elected to the board of directors of ISME in 1986.
