Canadian Music Research Council. Adjunct of the CMEA, organized by Frank Churchley (University of Victoria) and G. Campbell Trowsdale (University of British Columbia) and founded at the 1973 CMEA convention in Ottawa. Initially the council merely convened for research sessions every two years at CMEA conferences, but it then began to function on a more regular basis and cover an expanding range of activities. Its primary goal has been the collection and dissemination of information concerning music research activity in Canada in the fields of education (see Music education research), musicology, ethnomusicology, and bibliography. The council undertook 1974-5 an initial survey of such research and supplemented its findings in 1977. Chairmen of the council have been F. Deane Jensen (University of Saskatchewan at Regina) 1973-6, Margery Vaughan (University of Victoria) 1976-9, and H.E. Fiske (University of Western Ontario) 1979-83, succeeded by Robert Walker (Simon Fraser University) in 1983. The council published 13 issues of Music Research News 1976-83, which included abstracts, reviews of new material, announcements, and conference reports. The editors were Vaughan (no. 1-7) and Fiske (no. 8-13). Beginning in 1986, with Walker as editor, research publications resumed under a new title, Canadian Journal of Research in Music Education, published as a supplement to the Canadian Music Educator (vol 27, May 1986 and vol 29, Aug 1987); the title was changed to Canadian Music Educator Research Edition beginning with CME, vol 30, Jan 1989.
