Eggleston, Anne

Eggleston, Anne (Elizabeth). Composer, teacher, b Ottawa 6 Sep 1934, d there 27 Nov 1994; Artist Diploma (Toronto) 1956, M MUS (ESM, Rochester) 1958. She studied in Ottawa with Gladys Barnes and Robert Fleming, at the RCMT 1953-6 with Pierre Souvairan (piano) and Morawetz, Ridout, and Weinzweig (composition), and at the ESM with Bernard Rogers (composition) and Emily Davis and Orazio Frugoni (piano), completing Autumnal Clouds (1958) for baritone and orchestra as her master's thesis. In 1958 she began teaching piano and composition privately in Ottawa. Her String Quartet won as best work in the first CBC Radio Ottawa Original Music Competition, 1964. She received commissions from CAMMAC, the Charlottetown Festival, the Canadian Music Centre, and the WBM. Performances of her works, mainly in eastern Canada, established Eggleston as a serious composer. The Musica Camerata Montréal recorded Eggleston's Quartet for piano and strings (MCM001 Musicamerata, 1995). The work can also be heard on the RCI 472 and phonodisc DMds 5983; the latter label (DMds 5898) also features her Jewish Lullaby. She was an associate of the CMCentre. Her papers, as well as her piano, are found at the National Library of Canada.
