Winifred Lugrin Fahey (b Lugrin, m Fahey). Soprano, teacher, composer, b Fredericton 22 Sep 1884, d Victoria, BC, 28 Oct 1966. Of United Empire Loyalist stock, she studied with R. Thomas Steele in Vancouver. Her singing career (ca 1912-33) was confined by choice almost exclusively to Canada, although occasional US appearances included a New York recital, 18 Feb 1920, after which the Times described 'a voice of more than common capabilities - a voice of excellent natural quality, richness of range, and abundant power at both extremes'. In Toronto 1920-44, she was occupied largely with teaching but also composed several operettas, notably The Bride Ship, for performance by her students. She was a woman of immense enthusiasm and charm.
