Scott immigrated to Montréal in the mid-1850s, and became best known for his work in the Gothic style, which included churches in Ontario and Québec and an 1874 design for the Mackenzie Tower on the W block of the PARLIAMENT BUILDINGS. From 1871 until 1881 he was the first chief architect of the federal Dept of Public Works. He directed the post-Confederation building program, which produced some of Canada's finest examples of public building in the Second Empire style.
