Thane Campbell

Thane Alexander Campbell, premier, chief justice of PEI (b at Summerside, PEI 7 July 1895; d at Ottawa 28 Sept 1978). A Rhodes Scholar, Campbell became attorney general of PEI in 1930 before being elected to the legislature. He won a seat in 1931 but his party lost power.

Thane Alexander Campbell, premier, chief justice of PEI (b at Summerside, PEI 7 July 1895; d at Ottawa 28 Sept 1978). A Rhodes Scholar, Campbell became attorney general of PEI in 1930 before being elected to the legislature. He won a seat in 1931 but his party lost power. When the Liberals regained office in 1935, Campbell was renamed attorney general. He assumed the premiership on 14 January 1936, serving until 11 May 1943 when he became chief justice. He held that post until 1970 and then was appointed chief commissioner of the Foreign Claims Commission. A Companion of the Order of Canada, he was also active in heritage matters.
