Sidbec-Dosco (Ispat) Inc, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Ispat International group, has its principal steel mill in CONTRECOEUR, and its head office in MONTRÉAL, Québec. Sidbec-Dosco is Canada's fourth largest steel producer. Its principal products are hot- and cold-rolled sheet, strip, rods, bars, shapes, pipe, wire rod and wire.

Sidbec-Dosco was originally established in 1968 by the Québec government. Sidbec-Dosco receives its IRON ORE from Québec's North Shore and Brazil. In 1996 Sidbec-Dosco's shipments amounted to 1.5 million tons and net sales were $846 million. The company employs over 2000 people.

Major Facilities and Products

Sidbec-Dosco converts iron-ore pellets and steel scrap into liquid steel through a series of iron and steelmaking units: Sidbec's two Midrex facilities reduce pellets to DRI (direct-reduced iron); this is the only DRI plant of its kind in Canada. The DRI is fed, along with scrap and pig iron, into two EBT arc furnaces that convert this metallic charge into liquid steel. Two continuous-casting machines solidify the liquid steel into steel slabs and billets. A 60-in hot-strip Steckel mill rolls the cast slabs into hot-rolled strip. Two 52-inch cold-reversing mills then roll the hot-rolled strip to thinner cold-rolled strip. The cast billets are rolled in the rod and bar mills.

Sidbec-Dosco's subsidiaries and joint ventures manufacture a wide variety of steel products: Sidbec-Feruni (Ispat) Inc and Deitcher Brothers (1992) Inc reclaim scrap, Sorevco and Company, Ltd, galvanizes sheet, Walker Wire (Ispat) Inc and Acufil, Ltd Partnership make wire products, and Delta Tube and Company, Ltd, produces ERW pipe.
