Montgomery Wilson

Montgomery (Bud) Wilson, figure skater (born 20 August 1909 in Toronto, ON; died 15 November 1964 in Lincoln, Massachusetts). Wilson was the first Canadian to place in the top three in the ISU World Figure Skating Championships when he finished second in 1932. He also won the Olympic bronze medal that year, becoming the first Canadian (and the first North American male) to win an Olympic medal in figure skating.

In the men’s singles competition, Wilson won nine Canadian titles and six North American titles between 1929 and 1939. He also competed in pairs, usually with his sister, Constance Wilson-Samuel. The sibling duo won the Canadian Figure Skating Championships five times and the North American Figure Skating Championships three times between 1929 and 1934. Wilson also won Canadian and North American championships in the “fours” event. He retired from competition in 1939 and turned professional, appearing in skating club carnivals. He also taught at the St. Paul Figure Skating Club in Minnesota and in 1946 began coaching at The Skating Club of Boston. Wilson died in 1964 at the age of 55.
