Maple Leaf Foods Inc, with head offices in Toronto, is the largest Canadian producer of food products. The original company, established in 1927, was Canada Packers, Ltd, which acquired the capital stock of Gunns Ltd, The Harris Abattoir Co Ltd, the Canadian Packing Co Ltd and William Davies Co, Inc. In 1932 these operations were consolidated and Canada Packers, Ltd, became an operating company. The present name was adopted in 1990 when Canada Packers Inc and Maple Leaf Mills merged. Today the company produces a full line of food products, processing and distributing meat and poultry products and canning and freezing fruits and vegetables. It also produces and distributes soap, chemicals, pharmaceuticals, leather, feed and animal health products and sells to retail, wholesale, industrial and food service customers worldwide. The company has facilities in Canada, the UK and the US. As of December 1995 it had annual sales of $3.06 billion, assets of $1.3 billion and 11 000 employees. In 1995, McCain Capital Corp together with the Ontario Teacher's Pension Plan Board, purchased control of the company.
