Jeanne Fisher Manery

Jeanne Fisher Manery, biochemist (b at Chesley, Ont 6 July 1908; d at Toronto 9 Sept 1986). She was educated at the University of Toronto, did postdoctoral studies at the universities of Rochester and Harvard, and taught part time at U of T from 1932 to 1948, becoming full time in 1953 and full professor in 1965; she retired in 1976 but remained active in teaching, research, publishing and administration. An expert in the physiology of transport, into and out of cells, of water and the ions essential for many cellular functions, especially the generation of energy, Manery succeeded in isolating and characterizing the enzyme of the cellular membrane which catalyses cation transport, work described in numerous scientific papers in journals and monographs. Manery's honours in recognition of her scientific accomplishments included an honorary doctorate (1983) from Memorial University. Her scientific work and her feminist endeavours brought women a new status in her field.
