For successfully promoting and organizing one of Canada's first scientific services, Kingston has been called the father of Canadian METEOROLOGY. He was a Cambridge graduate and came to Canada in 1852; 3 years later he became professor of meteorology at the University of Toronto and director of the Toronto Observatory, a position he held until 1880. He was founding director of the national meteorological service 1871-80.
