Frederick William Russell, businessman, lieutenant-governor of Nfld (b at St John's, Nfld 10 Sept 1923). Russell was a fighter pilot with the RCAF in WWII and retired as a wing commander. He went into the automotive business in St John's and then expanded into insurance and fishing. Russell was active in labour relations in the province serving on a number of provincial boards and was also a board member of the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency. He served as honorary aide-de-camp to two lt-govs of Nfld and to both Gov Gens MASSEY and VANIER. Russell helped to found the St John's squadron of the Royal Canadian Air Cadets. A well-known business and community leader in St John's, Russell became Nfld's 77th lieutenant-governor and ninth since Confederation in 1991, serving until 1997.
