David Spencer. Patron, b Toronto 27 Oct 1915; BA (British Columbia) 1938. A lawyer by profession, Spencer became a member of the music section of the Community Arts Council of Vancouver after World War II and served as its chairman for two years. As donor and adviser he has assisted in the establishment and development of the Vancouver Opera, the Courtenay Youth Music Centre, the Edmonton Opera Association, and the Vancouver Academy of Music (formerly the Community Music School of Greater Vancouver). He believes that 'the development of endowment funds, including lands, should be held in trust for the beneficiary in perpetuity; only the interest on the capital should be available to the beneficiary. Thus, an organization in financial difficulty will not only be prevented from depleting its resources, which it otherwise would almost certainly do, but will also be enabled to maintain a base on which to build for the future' (personal communication).
