Charles Carpmael

Charles Carpmael, meteorologist (b at Streatham Hall, Eng 19 Sept 1846; d in Eng 21 Oct 1894). Carpmael directed the development and extension of the Canadian storm-warning and weather-forecasting services for more than a decade.

Charles Carpmael, meteorologist (b at Streatham Hall, Eng 19 Sept 1846; d in Eng 21 Oct 1894). Carpmael directed the development and extension of the Canadian storm-warning and weather-forecasting services for more than a decade. Following graduation from Cambridge, he came to Canada in 1872 as deputy director of the national meteorological service and succeeded G.T. KINGSTON as director in 1880. Director until 1894, Carpmael expanded the activities of the service in astronomy and became responsible for a national time service in 1883. He was a charter fellow and officer of the RSC and an officer of the Royal Canadian Institute.
