History and Economy

Burwash Landing was founded in 1904 shortly after gold was discovered nearby on Burwash Creek. Both the creek and the settlement were named after a mining recorder at Silver City, Lachlin Taylor Burwash. Burwash Landing was founded by two brothers, Louis and Eugene Jacquot. It served as a trade and supply centre for local prospectors and Southern Tutchone. The Jacquots began as prospectors, but they later chose to homestead at Burwash Landing and worked as guides and outfitters.

Today Burwash Landing relies more on tourism and supplying travellers on the Alaska Highway than on placer gold mining. The Kluane Museum of Natural History is located in Burwash Landing.
