Educated as an engineer at McGill, where he first took up flying, Nesbitt joined the RCAF in 1939 and fought with distinction (winning the DFC) in No 1 Fighter Squadron 1940-41. He subsequently commanded No 111 Squadron in the Aleutian campaign 1941-42 and No 114 Spitfire Wing and No 143 Typhoon Wing in the North-West Europe campaign 1944-45. He retired in 1945 as a group captain. Nesbitt was president and latterly also chairman of Nesbitt, Thomson, the investment dealership begun by his father, 1952-77, playing a significant role in the underwriting of a host of Canadian companies. His dynamic part in the birth of TransCanada Pipelines is celebrated in William Kilbourn's Pipe Line (1970); he served on the board of TCPL for many years, and on those of other major concerns as well. An active athlete throughout his life, he died shortly after a skiing accident left him almost completely paralyzed.
