Arthur Buies, baptized Joseph-Marie-Arthur, journalist, chronicler, essayist (b at Montréal 24 Jan 1840; d at Québec City 29 Jan 1901). A lucid witness to and passionate participant in the late 19th-century ideological battles, Buies left behind a body of exceptional works which are not well known.
Arla Saare, picture editor (born in Finland 1915). Arla Saare came to Canada in 1924 with her family. She started out as a medical photographer in a hospital in Vancouver. In 1942 she joined the National Film Board of Canada as a cutter and later worked in the optical and special effects department.
Aziz Ahmad, novelist, short story writer, critic, translator, historian (born 11 Nov 1914, Hyderabad, India; died 16 Dec 1978, Toronto). Aziz Ahmad arrived in Canada in 1962 as associate professor of Islamic Studies at the University of Toronto where, in 1968, he was promoted to full professor.
Albert Laberge, journalist, author (b at Beauharnois, Qué 18 Feb 1871; d at Montréal 4 Apr 1960). Laberge began school at the Académie Saint-Clément in Beauharnois and later attended Collège Sainte-Marie in Montréal, which he left in 1892. In 1894 he studied law at the École de Leblond de Brumath.
Albert Frank Moritz, poet, professor (b 15 Apr 1947 at Niles, Ohio, US). A.F. Moritz attended Marquette University (Wisconsin), where he earned a BA in journalism and a MA and PhD in English literature. Since 1974 he has lived in Toronto, where he is a professor at the University of Toronto.
