Frank J. Selke

Frank J. Selke, sport administrator and coach (b at Kitchener, Ont 7 May 1893; d at Rigaud, Qu 3 July 1985). At the age of 13, Selke became the manager of the Iroquois Bantams ice-hockey team in his hometown.

Frank J. Selke, sport administrator and coach (b at Kitchener, Ont 7 May 1893; d at Rigaud, Qu 3 July 1985). At the age of 13, Selke became the manager of the Iroquois Bantams ice-hockey team in his hometown. By 1918 he began his long association with CONN SMYTHE in Toronto, where he helped to build the Toronto Maple Leafs. He left Toronto in 1946 and went to Montréal where he guided the Canadiens to 6 Stanley Cup victories before retiring in 1964 after 18 years as general manager. Selke was elected to the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1960. A strong proponent of defensive hockey, the NHL honoured Selke by naming an award after him. The Frank J. Selke Trophy is awarded annually to the best defensive forward in the NHL, as chosen by the Professional Hockey Writers Association.
