William Raphael, painter (b in W Prussia in 1833; d 15 Mar 1914 at Montréal, Qué). A graduate of the Berlin School of Art, Raphael came to Canada in 1860, becoming well known for his painting of the Montréal harbour and market life. The elegance and precision of his paintings of townspeople waiting by the docks is also found in his portraits in the Parliament Buildings in Ottawa. He painted wild winter storms and wolves, and his work was included in Picturesque Canada (1882). By 1904 he was giving drawing and painting classes in Montréal and was appointed a member of the Conseil des arts et manufactures.
