Québec Provincial Police
In 1838 Lord DURHAM established a municipal police force for Montréal and Québec, and a rural force with jurisdiction over the rest of the province. Its structure was reorganized in 1938 by Maurice Duplessis, who at the time was both premier and solicitor general of the province. The force was renamed the Sûreté provinciale du Québec, and permanent provincial police stations were created in each of the 9 judiciary districts of the province. In 1961, the administrative structure of the force was redefined by a law passed by the newly elected Liberal Party of Jean Lesage, and in 1968 its name was shortened to Sûreté du Québec. With 107 stations across the province, the Sûreté maintains law and order as well as public safety. It enforces Québec and specific federal laws, eg, the Criminal Code and narcotics laws. It also assists municipal police forces.
