Fleming, May Agnes

May Agnes Fleming, née Early, novelist (b at Saint John 15 Nov 1840; d at Brooklyn, NY 24 Mar 1880). She began publishing while still a schoolgirl, her early stories appearing in New York and Boston, Massachusetts, as well as in local papers. By the time she moved to Brooklyn around 1875, she was an established writer. Her novels were serialized in New York and London before being published in book form. Prolific and highly paid, she combined in her fiction elements of romance and gothic mystery and introduced into her later work a private detective. Her best novels are enlivened by fast-moving plots, brisk dialogue and flashes of humour.
