John Mason

John Mason, governor of the English colony in Newfoundland (b at King's Lynn, Eng 1586; d at London, Eng 1635). In 1615 he was appointed the second governor of the colony at Cuper's Cove (Cupids, Newfoundland), succeeding John GUY, and arrived in 1616 accompanied by his wife.

John Mason, governor of the English colony in Newfoundland (b at King's Lynn, Eng 1586; d at London, Eng 1635). In 1615 he was appointed the second governor of the colony at Cuper's Cove (Cupids, Newfoundland), succeeding John GUY, and arrived in 1616 accompanied by his wife. He explored much of the island and used his findings in the first English map known to be based on personal survey and in writing A Briefe Discourse of the New-Found-Land (1620). He left in 1621 for New England, where he founded the colony of New Hampshire.
