John Babington Macaulay Baxter, lawyer, politician, premier and chief justice of NB (b at Saint John 16 Feb 1868; d there 27 Dec 1946).

John Babington Macaulay Baxter, lawyer, politician, premier and chief justice of NB (b at Saint John 16 Feb 1868; d there 27 Dec 1946). Baxter played a leading part in the development of the Conservative Party in New Brunswick and was a leader in the Maritime Rights movement of the 1920s. He was a city councillor (1892-1910), attorney general of NB (1915-17), federal minister of customs (1921), premier 1925-31 and chief justice 1935-46. He was the author of Historical Records of the New Brunswick Regiment, Royal Artillery (1896), the unit he had commanded from 1907 to 1912.
