George Campbell Pidgeon

Pidgeon, George Campbell

George Campbell Pidgeon, Presbyterian and United Church minister (b at Grand-Cascapédia, Qué 2 Mar 1872; d at Toronto 15 June 1971). After being ordained (1894) and earning his DD from Presbyterian College, Montréal, Pidgeon served churches in Montréal, Streetsville, Ontario, and Toronto. He taught practical theology at Westminster Hall, Vancouver (1909-15), then served Bloor St United Church, Toronto, from 1915 until his retirement in 1948. From 1949 until 1960 he wrote a religious column for the Toronto Telegram. Pidgeon led the Presbyterian Church into the union of 1925 and was unanimously elected the first moderator of the UNITED CHURCH OF CANADA. During his long and distinguished career, he was a staunch supporter of temperance and home mission work and helped promote the World Alliance of Reformed Churches, the Canadian Council of Churches and the World Council of Churches. He was chief spokesman of the United Church and was its embodiment to the country and to the Christian community.
