George Alexander Elliott, economist, professor, civil servant (b at Napier, Ont 22 July 1901). A man whose imagination, exactitude and humanity inspired his students, Elliott made important contributions to economic theory in articles in learned journals while professor at the University of Alberta 1929-46 and the University of Toronto 1946-57. References to his work still appear in scientific literature. Turning his attention to Canadian trade policy, he published Tariff Procedures and Trade Barriers in 1955 and was appointed to the Tariff Board of Canada from 1957 to 1971. He was elected to the Royal Society of Canada in 1947 and was elected president of the Canadian Political Science Association in 1957; he was awarded an LLD by Queen's in 1965.
