Wix, Edward

Edward Wix, Church of England clergyman, missionary (b at Faulkbourne, Eng 1 Feb 1802; d at Swanmore, Isle of Wight, Eng 24 Nov 1866). Wix graduated from Oxford in 1824 and was ordained in 1825. He first served as a missionary in Nova Scotia but moved to Newfoundland where he was appointed archdeacon in 1830. He spent the next 8 years travelling around the Island, preaching, raising funds and organizing the Church of England. After a 6-month missionary tour along the S and W coasts of Newfoundland in 1835, he published Six Months of a Newfoundland Missionary's Journal (1836). Wix was the driving force behind fund raising for St Thomas's Church, St John's, which opened in 1836. In Oct 1838 he returned to England. His appeals to church officials in England undoubtedly led to the appointment in 1839 of the first Church of England bishop of Newfoundland, Aubrey George Spencer.
