Edmond Dyonnet

Edmond Dyonnet, painter, teacher (b at Crest, France 25 June 1859; d at Montréal 6 July 1954). Dyonnet studied in Turin with Gilardi and in Naples with Morelli. He came to Canada with his parents 1875.

Edmond Dyonnet, painter, teacher (b at Crest, France 25 June 1859; d at Montréal 6 July 1954). Dyonnet studied in Turin with Gilardi and in Naples with Morelli. He came to Canada with his parents 1875. By 1891 he was teaching art at the Monument national and he was elected associate of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts in 1893 and academician in 1903, also serving as the Academy's secretary 1910-49. A professor at and director of the design school at the Conseil des arts et manufactures in Montréal for 31 years, he also taught at the École polytechnique in Montréal 1907-22. Dyonnet helped found Montréal's École des beaux-arts in 1922 and was a professor there until 1924. He taught at McGill from 1920-36. In 1910 France made him an officer of the Académie. He won silver medals at the exhibitions in Buffalo (1910) and in St Louis, Missouri (1904). In 1968 the University of Ottawa published his Mémoires d'un artiste canadien.
