Albert H. MacCarthy, mountaineer (b at Ames, Iowa 1876; d at Annapolis, Maryland 11 Oct 1956). Though by vocation a US naval officer and entrepreneur, MacCarthy was by avocation a mountaineer with a passion for pioneering new climbs in western Canada. After joining the Alpine Club of Canada in 1911, he participated in many difficult ascents, including Mount Robson (3954 m, in 1913), the highest summit of the Canadian Rockies. He is best remembered, however, as the leader of the team that conquered Mount Logan, at 5950 m the highest peak in Canada. The expedition, 65 gruelling days of wilderness travel through Alaska and the Yukon, met success on 23 June 1925.
